Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy(1817-1875), Count , writer, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg (1873). In 1834 he was accepted as a "student" to Moscow's archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; in 1835 he passed an exam to attain the rank at Moscow university and then he served several years abroad.Since 1840 he did the service in the Second Section Of His Imperial Majesty's Own Chancery In Russia; Kammerjunker (1843), Master of Ceremonies in court(1851), aide-de-camp to the Tsar (1856).He resigned in 1861. He was a close friend of the Tsesarevich Alexander Nickolaevich ( future tsar Alexander II). He started his literary career in Saint Petersburg at the beginning of the 1840s . Much of his poetry (more than 70 poems) has been set to music by famous Russian composers. As a dramatist he had a deep interest in Russia's past: dramatic trilogy "Smert Ioanna Groznogo" (1866; The Death of Ivan the Terrible, 1869);" Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich" (1868 ); and "Tsar Boris" (1870). Under the joint pseudonym “Kozma Prutkov, in collaboration with two cousins A.M.Zhemchuzhnikov and V.M.Zhemchuzhniko, Tolstoy began to publish satirical verses and literary parodies in the journal Sovremennik ("Contemporary") and satirical supplement "Svistok" ("Whistle") .Tolstoy had a country estate Pustynka ( it was not survived ) on the right bank of the river Tosno (Pustynka village,Tosno District) where he lived after his retirement. Zhеmchuzhnikov brothers, I.A.Goncharov,A.A.Fet, Y.P.Polonsky, I.S. Turgenev, V.P.Botkin, I.S.Aksakov, A.V. Nikitenko visited him there.
