Subject / Architecture/Country estates

Pustunka, a country estate (the town of Nikolskoye, the Tosno district). Since 1817 a part of the waste ground on the River Tosna right bank belonged to the literary man A.D. Kopyev which built a small estate there and gave it the name Pustinka. In 1850 the estate was bought by Countess A.A. Tolstaya, the mother of A.K. Tolstoy. The Tolstoys built a stone manor-house in the English Gothic style (the architect V.Ya. Langvagen on the project of A.I. Shtakenschneider). An outhouse for visitors, an office, stables, a coach-house joined by the idea unity were included in the estate ensemble. The Tolstoys was visited by many writers and scientists including I.A. Goncharov, N.I. Kostomarov, I.S. Turgenev, A.A. Fet, Ya.P. Polonsky and many others. In 1875 after Tolstoy's death the estate was passed into the ownership of S.A. Khitrovo. In 1912 the fire destroyed all constructions; at the present time two ponds and parts of the park are intacted.
