Symbol of the Leningrad Oblast Governor

Subject / Heraldry

The Symbol of the Leningrad Oblast Governor is the official breast sign. It is the main symbol of the post and status of the Leningrad Oblast Governor. The main element of the symbol is a medallion of the intricate shape in the form of the Leningrad Oblast’s coat of arms and in the original style. The symbol is reproduced in the figure heraldic shield. On the reverse of the medallion there is a relief inscription “GUBERNATOR LENINGRADSKOY OBLASTI” (The Governor of the Leningrad Oblast) (in three rows). At the top of the medallion there is a decorative element in the form of miniature stylized fir branches with a ring for attachment to the chain. The chain consists of 12 big links which have shape of the heraldic shield, 12 small links and two small chains which loop the chain along the upper and lower edges. The chain also consists of connective links which fasten big and small links, and similar links which make up the chains. Six links from 12 big links have the form of relief golden ornamental scroll-cartouche with the symbolic compositions on them: “Podsvechnik s dvumya svechami v siyanii” (The candlestick with two candles in the light), “Drevniy korabl na volnah” (The ancient ship on waves), “Lutiy zver” (The fierce brut), “Tzar-sculptor, vuisekauschiy tzaritzu iz scaly” (Tsar-sculptor who carves the Tsarina from a rock), “Mech i schit na fone plameni” (The sword and shield against a background of the flame), “Solnce, voshodyaschee iz-za lesa” (The sun rising from the forest). The oval medallion, which has a symbolic composition at the centre, is surrounded with the oak wreath. Other six big links have the form of the color (with enamel) heraldic shields with territory symbols. These symbols are reproduced the next coats of arms: the coat of arms of the Saint-Petersburg Gubernia according to the Edict of the 1878; the coat of arms of the Izhora Principality according to the version of the 1730 (On the azure field there are two silver crossbelts with wall-merlon along the upper edge); the coat of arms of the Izhora Principality of the times of Peter the Great (Within the azure field on the green ground there is a fortress wall with an arch and loopholes. There are three towers behind the wall. The middle tower is higher than others. There is a flag with two pigtails over each tower. The middle one is red dark, the two others are silver.); the “Nevsky” coat of arms according to the version of 1730 (On the dark red field there is an azure column on the green ground. Above the column there is a golden put crosswise key with the eye downwards and a silver sword with a golden hilt. The key and sword are tied by the purple ribbon); the coat of arms of the south of historical Karelia (On the dark red field there are two arms in silver armour that are opposed each other. The arms raise the silver swords with golden hilts. There are tree golden crowns at the top.); the coat of arms “Ladozhsky” (Ladoga) according to the version of the 1730 (within the azure filed on the waved silver extremity there are two dark red wings of the opening sluice gate. The wings of the gate are trimmed with gold.). The small links have forms of figures of the Leningrad Oblast's coat of arms. 12 big links alternate with 12 small ones. Six links are made in the form of scroll-cartouche and six links in the form of shields of the coat of arms are in turn. When the Leningrad Oblast Governor is appointed, his initials, the surname and the year of the appointment are drown on the reverse of one of the big links; if the Governor is elected again the existing inscription is added with the new date. In the definition of the symbolic, the big links are enumerated in the order of distance from the main element with preference of the right side (from the perspective of someone who wears the sign) against the left one. The reverse order is used for drawing inscriptions on the reverse of big links.
