Stone Crosses

Subject / Relics

Stone crosses are the essential part of zhalnik and earth burial grounds, cemeteries and on churches' pogosts of the Novgorod Land. Grave crosses were placed at the head of burial grounds. As far as destruction of desolate graves, crosses were moved into village chapels or into the fenced sanctified church plots. There are worship and memorable crosses erected at roads, on banks of rivers. Crosses of the 15th-16th centuries have the image of Calvary and various variants of an inscription in glorificarion of Jesus Christ. Crosses without inscriptions date from the later times. There are data about the existence of stone crosses in 99 settlements of the modern Leningrad Oblast in the early 20th century. Most of stone crosses were lost from that times. There are single survived crosses placed in villages of Lyutka and Navolok of the Luga district, in villages of Beseda, Knyazhevo, Stariye Smolegovitsi of the Volosovo district, in the village of Lozhgolovo of the Slantsi district, in the village of Zheleznaya Gora of the Kirishi district, in the village of Cherkasova Gora of the Boksitigorsk district and other places.
