THE GATCHINA TOWN CHILDREN LIBRARY (Gatchina Town, No 8 Kirgetov Street). Founded in 1945. The library took over from Trotsk (Gatchiha Town) Uyezd Central Children Library that functioned in 1920s. The fund contains 52,000 storage units, with 6,000 members and 127,000 borrowings a year. Since the beginning of 1990s the library has been developing as centre for childhood forfending, and is a leader in promotion of books and reading for children in the town, including the work of “Sem’ya” (Family) information-and-leisure centre and the process of organization of the Petersburg children books fund. The library is also home to children literary creative work studio “Lesenki” (The Steps); it published a collection of children’s works “Ya zhivu v Gatchine” (Gatchina is My Home Town). Here were also published three collections of local history studies: “Pokoriteli rossiyskogo neba” (The Conquerors of the Russian Skies), “Sozvezdie tryokh muz” (The Three Muses Constellation), “Kak tvoyo imya, ulitsa?” (Street, Tell Me Your Name). In 1930s the library was located at house no. 50 on 25 Oktyabrya Prospekt (25 October Prospect); in 1945 to 1967 library was placed in Krasnaya Street; since 1967 it was placed – in a purpose-built block at its present address.
