THE TIKHVIN CENTRAL TOWN LIBRARY (6, 4th postal area and 11, 3rd postal area, Tikhvin Town). The library was founded in 1927. Since 1977 it was in charge of the district centralized library network, since 2006 it has been the central library of Tikhvin Town. Its general-purpose fund numbers 91,000 items. Of special value is local history fund, which offers full range of issues of “Russkaya starina” magazine for the years 1874 to 1914, and the Tikhvin zemstvo almanac of 1918. The library has around 5,000 readers, with 100,000 loans a year and 35,000 visits annually. In cooperation with the Tikhvin Town children’s home the library carries on work on the project “Sluzhba spaseniya” (The Rescue Service), provides information service for instructors and counselors, teachers and medical professionals. With the support of D. S. Likhachev International charitable foundation, on the base of the library and College 8 was created “Shkola yunykh kraevedov” (The School for Young Area Study Experts). The library organizes and hosts annual “Mordvinovskie kraevedcheskie uezdnye chteniya” (Mordvinov Local History Uezd Readings). For over ten years the library staff have hosted a series of radio programmes “Reportazhi iz proshlogo” (The Reports from the Past) on the local radio station. The library runs “Stroki” (The Lines) (poetical) club and organizes “Maly vernisazh” (The Little Vernissage) exhibitions of the works of local photographers and artists. One of structural division of the library is information-and-educational centre “Nadezhda” (Hope) which assists in arranging leisure time activities for people with disabilities.
