Kolchanovo, a country estate

Subject / Architecture/Country estates

Kolchanovo, a country estate (the village of Kolchanovo, the Volkhov district). In 1865 Kolchanovo was bought by M.R. Sharapov, a state peasant by origin. A wooden manor-house faced to the River Syas was built in the 1860s. Due to dividing the facades covered with boards, uprights painted in blue colour the house resembled a timber-frame construction a little. Various projections, balconies, bay windows designed with carving, verandahes with panes of glass of different colours give to the building a romantic image (local inhabitants name it "a castle"). While the manor-house was being built, the park was being laid out, a dam on the River Vybitsa was being made, small bridges and stone stairs were built. The house was added to the stone tower of the lighthouse which had been there since the 1840s when steamship lining was opened on the River Syas. The house and the stone Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God (it was built in 1854-1862) are in good condition now. Ruins of the Church od the Christmas have been intacted not far from the estate.
