VOLKHOV DISTRICT, a part of Leningrad Oblast. Area: 5124 sq. km, population: 97,300. Established in 1927. Adm. center: Volkhov Town. V. D. comprises the towns of Syasstroy and Novaya Ladoga, and 277 rural localities. Located south of Lake Ladoga on both sides of the Volkhov River in its lower course. Among the larger rivers are Syas, Pasha, Valgomka, and Voronezhka. The Ladoga and Syas canals extend across the district. It has railway communications with St. Petersburg, Vologda, Novgorod, Petrozavodsk, Murmansk. Motor roads extend parallel to railway tracks, Murmansk Highway being the most important one. Where the Ladozhka River flows into the Volkhov, Staraya Ladoga, one of the most ancient settlements in Russia, is located. The “trade road from the Vikings to the Greeks” extended along the Volkhov River. The territory of the current V. D. belonged to the Vodskaya and Obonezhskaya Pyatinas of the Novgorod Land (see Nikolsky Syassky Pogost, Rozhdestvensky Pashsky Pogost, Rozhdestvensky Syassky Pogost.) In the early 18th century, it was a part of St. Petersburg Gubernia. After the gubernia reform of 1775, the major part of the district belonged to Novaya Ladoga Uyezd. Numerous monasteries were in the district’s area, such as the Zelenetsky Monastery of the Holy Trinity, Monastery of St. Basil, the Gostinopolsky Monastery of St. Nicholas, the Storozhensky Nikolaevsky Monastery of St. Cyprian, the Staroladozhsky Monastery of St. John the Baptist, the Staroladozhsky Monastery of St. Nicholas, the Staroladozhsky Convent of the Assumption etc. Orthodox parishes are currently active in the towns of Volkhov, Novaya Ladoga and Syasstroy, in Kiselnya village (see Great Martyr Theodore Stratelates Church), Rogozha Village (see Virgin Mary’s Cathedral church), Gorka-Khvalovskaya village, Staraya Ladoga settlement, and Chernavino, Dudachkino, and Issad villages. Uspenskoye and Kolchanovo estates were located in V.D.. Famous natives of V. D. are painter Peredvizhnik V. M. Maksimov and poet L. N. Afanasiev. During WW2, there was stubborn fighting in the south of the district, and its railways were used to supply the blockaded Leningrad. V. D. has Volkhov central district library (Volkhov Town), 13 rural libraries, and libraries in Novaya Ladoga and Syasstroy towns. A historic, architectural, and archeological reserve museum exists in Staraya Ladoga. The “Volkhovskiye Ogni” newspaper is published. Industrial facilities are located in Volkhov and Syasstroy towns. Forest management is developing (Volkhov, Pasha, and Volkhov Rural Forestries.) The leading agricultural sectors are dairy farming, potato farming, and vegetable farming. Touring has been developing in recent years (incl. Monastery pilgrimage tours.) The “Staroladozhsky” state integrated natural monument was established in 1976 (see Staraya Ladoga settlement.) Another natural monument is the sand dunes on the Lake Ladoga shore in the interfluve of the Volkhov and Syas. In 1870s, A. A. Inostrantsev discovered remains of Neolithic sites in those places. In 1973, a site near Berezye village was discovered, where Neolithic ceramics of various types, bone implements, and animal remnants were found. Very many archeological finds dated to the Middle Ages have been discovered in V. D. (see Ladoga South Coast burial mounds, Oleg’s grave.)
