"Serenade of the Vyborg Castle", an jazz festival

“SERENADY VYBORGSKOGO ZAMKA“ (“SERENADES OF THE VYBORG CASTLE”), jazz festival. It has been annually held in Vyborg Town on the first Saturday of July since 1996. Organizer – “Vyborgsky Zamok” (“Vyborg Castle”), state museum. The first festival was a part of the framework of the International Sailing Regatta, the participants were jazzmen from St.Petersburg and the Leningrad Oblast as well as from Lappeenranta (Finland). Later on different kinds of musical groups from Russia and abroad became the festival participants. The festival takes place in the courtyard of Vyborg Castle in the open air. Traditionally, it is opened by a saxophone solo under the dome of Saint Olaf Tower. In the first part of the festival “Dety Igrayut Dzhaz” (“Children Play Jazz”) young jazzmen perform, in the second part – “My Iz Dzhazovogo Veka” (“We Are From A Jazz Century”) jazzmen’s performances take turn with “lessons on jazz history”, which are given by V.B. Feyertag, jazz critic and theorist. The programme of the festival is supplemented with variety dance groups’ performances and fashion show. In the end of the festival colourful fireworks go off.
