Studing the local history of the Leningrad Oblast. The interest for studing the history, culture, geography of single regions and towns, which were included in the Leningrad Oblast now, became apparent from the middle of the 19th century among the local intelligentsia and nobles. It produced the appearance of publications on the local history in the local periodical press and collections, assisted in publishing single books as well as creating private museum collections. The purposeful activity became possible in connection with the district reform of 1864 which furthered getting all interested people to studing "native land". Public societies, making the study, popularization and protection of the region historic heritage their aim, appeared in the early 20th century. The work of the Tikhvin branch of the Novgorod Antiquity Lovers Society (1913-1923) and the work of Tikhvin Society of the Native Region Study (1924-1929), that changed it, are wide known. The Society members fulfilled researches on archaeology, history, ethnography, agriculture, statistics, geology of the region. They published a number of works on the local history of the Tikhvin uyezd, organized the culture and educational work among the local population, created the museum, organized the registration and protection of monuments of history and culture. During the first years of the Soviet power the local history studing work was orientated to fulfilling real-world problems connected with discovering local natural resources which are necessary for the industrial development, as well as the research of agriculture. The research work was continued, numerous publications are evidence of it. The establishment of the Central Local History agency headed by the academician S.F. Oldenburg as well as attracting the People's Commissariat of Education of the RSFSR and the Academy of Sciences to the work testifyed the attraction of the state to the local history studing. The local history conferences were held, special magazines such as "Krayevedeniye" ("The Local History Study", 1923-1929) and "Izvestiya Tsentralnogo Byuro Krayevedeniya" ("The Proceedings of the Central Local History Agency", 1925-1929) were published in the RSFSR from 1921. The editions devoted the great attention to the Leningrad Oblast local history study. The Leningrad Society of the Local History Study worked actively. In 1927 a two-volume collection "Trudi" ("Works") was published. Between the late 1920s and the early 1930s the local history study movement was stopped in the country and many its participations were subjected to repression. The new reviving of the local history study work in the Leningrad Oblast was started in the late 1950s -1960s. Local historians' works appeared in the local press, the publication of books on the local hidtory of single towns was started. The new direction of the local history study movement, connected with the mass involving school children in it, appeared. School museums, rooms of the battle and labour glory, clubs and groups of "Red pathfinders" are established. They look for the deceaseds during the World War II and immortalize their memory. The district and town museums of the local history were established later on the base of school museums. In the present days the museums play the great role in the development of the local history. They collect, work up, keep, study and exhibit materials collected by more then one generation of local historians and function as guidance centres. In 1977 the united meseum network was created: the Board of Museums of the Leningrad Oblast (from 1994 it is the Oblast Museum Agency, from 1998 it is "The Museum Agency", the state establishment of culture). At the same time the local history study work was done by the oblast libraries. The coordination of the work is provided by specialists of the Leningrad Oblast Universal Research Library (LOUNB). Devotees-local historians continue their work too. In the border of 1980s-1990s the local history tourism obtained the development in the Leningrad Oblast. The number of the local history editions, including collections, anthologies, is increased. In the early 2000s the first web sites of the local history was created in the Internet.
