BOOK TRADE.On the territory of Saint Petersburg Gubernia book trade showed slow progress due to the closeness of a large Saint Petersburg market which almost satisfied the public's need for books.By 1904 the specialized book trade had been registered only in Gatchina (three persons who sold books) ,Shlisselburg Town and also in Gdov, Narva, Petergof, Tsarskoye Selo and Kronshtadt which used to be a part of Saint Petersburg Gubernia at that time. The selling of cheap books for people was conducted by peddlers, and also in small shops as tying products. More educated and well-to-do consumers bought books in the capital. Gradually the distribution of books for people was handled by educational organizations, libraries, departments of Trusteeship on people's sobriety that built their own warehouses. Zemskii (land) book warehouses played an important role and they also provided specialized sets of books for people and school libraries. Periodicals and books were also sold at railway stations. After the October revolution of 1917 centralized and monopolized book trade organizations were gradually established .In Leningrad Oblast planned, systematic supply of bookshops was provided by " Lenkniga"(regional department of "Soyuzkniga").Central and regional publishing houses (in Leningrad and Oblast it was "Lenizdat" Publishing House) issued books according to the approval year plans on which an advance order was placed in shops. As circulation of books did not meet the consumer's demand due to directive planning , popular books were in shortage. At the beginning of the 1990s the system of directive planning distribution of books came to end. Some bookshops were closed or changed to a different type of shop. The range of books for sale became limited. In 1990-93 hawker's stand selling prevailed, gradually it came to end. At present there are specialised bookshops in Boksitogorsk, Pikalyevo,Volkhov (2), Vsevolozhsk (3), Vyborg (2),Gatchina (2),Kirishi ,Kirovsk, Slantsi , Sosnoviy Bor ,Tikhvin,Tosno, and also in Ul'yanovka Urban Settlement (Tosno district). Books are also sold in kiosks at junction stations and various shops. In subsequent years in towns of Leningrad oblast shops of large booktrade chains like "Snark"( Vsevolozhsk Town), "Bukvoed"(Tosno) were opened.
