Repnikov, Nikolay Ivanovich (1882-1940), an archaeologist, researcher of Staraya Ladoga and other archaeological sites of the Leningrad Oblast. From 1902 he worked at the Archaeology Committee and the Russian Archaeologic Society, after the revolution he worked at GAIMK (the State Archaeology Institute of the Material Culture History), then at the Central restoration workshops, at the ethnographic department of the Russian Museum. His long researches results in the Crimea attracted the attention of Russian and foreign archaeologists. Repnikov researched archaeological sites of the Novgorod Land, carried out exploring, registration and excavating barrows, he charted the assembled map of zhalniks with their desciptions, researched sacrifice places. During 1909-1913 he researched the earth fortified settlement (gorodishche) of Staraya Ladoga. It was one of the first attempts of systematic excavations of an Old Russian town of broad area. Repnikov was a competent expert on icon painting, monumental painting and applied art of Old Russia. He took part in the discovering and restoring valuable works including frescos in the church of St. George of the 12th century in Staraya Ladoga and in the church of St. Nicholas of the 15th century in Gostinopolye Village.
