Baikov, Aleksey Mikhaylovich (1791- 1854), an architect

Aleksey Mikhaylovich Baikov (1790-1854), an architect, a graduate of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1813). From 1816 he was an architect of the Gatchina Town Board, from 1843 he was an architect of the Gatchina palace board. During 40 years Baikov was at general monitoring of building in Gatchina. He built many houses using typical projects. 128 Baikov's drafts are stored in the Gatchina Palace-museum funds, 104 drafts of them are connected with Gatchina. Amang Baikov's significant works there is a group of buildings at the southern side of Gospitalnaya (Hospital) Square built in the late classicism style from 1827 to 1841. In 1827-28 Baikov built the building of the Lutheran church of St. Nicolas in Bolshoy Prospect (25 October Prospekt). It was built according to D. Kvadri's project. In 25 October Prospekt there are some unharmed buildings built by Baikov: the merchant Vargin's house (Nos. 7, 9), the merchant Shelayev's house (No.11), the merchant Yunin's house (No.15), Kandalintsev's house (No. 42) and others. Aleksey Mikhaylovich Baikov was buried in Gatchina.
