Heinrich Osipovich Graftio (1869- 1949), a scientist, power engineer, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1932). He graduated from the Novorossiysk University in Odessa in 1892 and the St. Petersburg Institute of Railway Engineers in 1896. From 1900 to 1917 Graftio designed and built railways, took part in designing and organizing the tram traffic in St. Petersburg. He developed the project of the hydroelectric power stations on the Malaya Imatra River in 1905 and on the Volkhov River (1911). From 1907 he was a teacher and from 1921 - a professor of the Petrograd/Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute. H.O. Graftio was one of the authors of GOELRO plan. From 1918 he was the chief engineer assistant and during 1921-1926 - the chief engineer of the Volkhov hydroelectric power station building. From 1927 to 1935 he led building the Nizhnesvirskaya hydroelectric power station. H.O. Graftio was buried in Bolsheokhtinskoye cemetery in St. Petersburg. Nizhnesvirskaya hydroelectric power station was named after H.O. Graftio. Monuments to the scientist were installed in the towns of Volkhov and Svirstroy. In Graftio's house built according to his project (Volkhov Town, 27, October Embankment; there is a memorial tablet) in 1969 the Museum of Volkhov Town History was opened.
