Baptism. Kind of Protestantism. In 1880 the first baptist prayer hall was opened in St Petersburg, in 1884 the first congress of baptists and the Evangelical Christians of Russia, closed to it, took place in St Petersburg. Soon the ban on the preaching of Baptism was adopted which was repealed in 1905. In the early 20th century I.S. Prokhanov, one of the leaders of the Evangelical Christians (he was a vice-president of the World Baptist Union), published the magazine ""Christian"" (1905-1916) and the magazine ""Morning Star""(1909-1916) in Peresburg. In 1912 the community was organized in Schlüsselburg. In 1924 Baptists and the Evangelical Christians were united. In the 1920s 43 communities (4,500 members) were in the Leningrad Oblast. The All-Union Council of the Evangelican Christians was in Leningrad. В 1940 the last prayer hall was closed in the city of Kingisepp, the Leningrad Oblast. During the occupation of 1941-1944 six communities were revived in: Vyritsa, Tosno, Gatchina, Antropshino, Volosovo and Kotly but these communities were not registered. In 1944 the All-Union Council of the Evangelical Christian -Baptists (ЕCБ) was formed as the governing centre of united Evangelical Christians, Baptists, and later the Evangelical Christians in the Spirit of Apostles and the Mennonite Brethren. Communitry of ECB was registered in Leningrad in 1946, besides this community 15 groups (about 3,000 members) were in the 1950s -the 1960s in the Leningrad Oblast but these groups were not registered. In 1961 community of 200 men was formed in the Tosno District. The Troitskaya Orthodox Church (in 1962) and the Pokrovskaya Orthodox Church (House of the Gospels from 1989) were trensferred to baptists in Leningrad. In 1991 four communities of ЕCB were in St Petersburg (14 communities in 2004) and seven communities were in the oblast (17 communities in 2004). Besides in 2004 seventeen communities of the the Evangelical Christians and two communities of the Evangelical Christians in the Spirit of Apostles were in the oblast. Now the branches of the Russia Union of the Evangelical Christian -Baptists worked in Tkhvin, Volkhov, Vyborg, Luga, Slantsy and in the village of Pribytkovo (the Gatchina District). Since 1993 Y.V. Podosenov is the senior presbyter of the Union in St Petersburg and the Leningrad Oblast.
