Velten, Yuri Matveyevich (George Friedrich) (1730 - 1801), an architect, teacher. Felten learned at the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences???? during 1740-1745, in 1750 he graduated from the Tyubingen University. He was the chief architect of the Building Office from 1740 to 1745. From 1775 he was a professor and then the Head of the Academy of Arts. In St. Petersburg Velten designed the building of the Old Hermitage (1771-1787), the Chesmenskaya Church (1777-1780), the Summer Garden Fence from the Neva River (1771-1784; together with P.E. Yegorov) and many others. Velten was the author of buldings in Tsarskoye Selo and Peterhof towns. The Lutheran Church of SS Peter and Paul the Apostles (1793-1796) was built according to Velten's project in Vyborg Town. The classicism style church was very important for the town and was a construction which determined the architectural view of a central town square. Velten was the author of the Paper-Mill building in Ropsha.
