Bryullov, Karl Ivanovich (1799-1852), an artist

BRYULLOV, Karl Pavlovich (1799–1852), an artist. He graduated from the St.Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts (1821), his teachers were A.I. Ivanov, A.Y. Yegorov and V.K. Shebuyev. In the period 1823-27 he trained in Italy, receiving Imperial scholarship from the Academy, he stayed in Italy up to 1836. In the period 1836-50 Bryullov lived in St.Petersburg. In 1834 he became an Honorary Member of the Free Artists’ Society, in the period 1836-49 he worked as a professor at the Imperial Academy of Arts. Bryullov was a master of historical painting (“Posledny Den Pompey” (“The Last day of Pompea”), 1830-33, etc.) and a portrait painter. He participated in painting of St.Isaac’s and Kazan Cathedrals (1843-47). In 1850 he moved to Italy, where he died in some place near Rome. In the end of 1830s Bryullov together with M.I. Glinka and V.P. Golitsyn went to Pargolovo Village suburbs for recreation, he stayed at Y.F. Yanenko country house. Bryullov together with M.I. Glinka visited Hepojarvi Lake near Toksovo Settlement. In the beginning of 1820s and in the period 1830–40s he many times visited Olenins’ Priyutino estate where he painted A.N. Olenin’s portrait, made sketches and friendly caricatures.
