Musorgsky, Modest Petrovich (1839-1881), a musician

MUSORGSKY, Modest Petrovich (1839–1881), composer. He spent his childhood in Karevo Village, Toropets Uyezd of the Pskov Gubernia, there he started to study music. He graduated from the School of warrant officers of the guard and cavalry cadets in St.Petersburg (1856), he was enrolled in Preobrazhensky Regiment of the Guards. In 1858 he resigned, having considered to dedicate himself to music. In 1863 due to financial problems he had to start working again: first he worked at the archives of the Engineering Department, in 1868 he moved to the Wood Department. Musorgsky is an author of the opera “Boris Godunov” (1869, 2nd version 1872), he worked on the operas “Khovanshchina” and “Sorochonskaya Yarmarka” (“Fair in Sorochintsy Village”) (both are not finished). In 1870s Musorgsky created his best love songs, piano suite “Kartinki s Vystavky” (“Pictures from the Exhibition”), vocal collection “Detskaya” (“Children’s Room”), symphonic music “Noch na Lysoy Gore” (“Night on the Lysaya Mountain”). In February 1881 Musorgsky was put into Nikolaevsky Military Hospital in St.Petersburg where he died. In 1867 Musorgsky spent summer and autumn at his brother Filaret (Yevgeny) Petrovich’s country house Minkina (modern Kamenka Village, Luga District). There he wrote a love song “Svetik Savvishna” (“Dear Savvishna”), “Intermezzo” for the orchestra, etc. In 1878 he visited M.A. Balakirev in Gatchina Town. Musorgsky was buried in Tikhvin Cemetery in Alexander Nevsky Laura (modern Necropolis of Masters of Arts in Alexander Nevsky Laura ) in St.Petersburg.
