Rylov, Arkady Aleksandrovich (1870 - 1939), an artist

RYLOV, Arkadiy Aleksandrovich (1870–1939), artist, teacher, academician of painting, (1915), Honoured Arts Worker of the Russian Federation (1935). He studied at Baron A.L. Stiglitz’ Central Drawing School in St.Petersburg (1888-91) and took lessons from A.I. Kuindzhi at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1894-97). Rylov worked as a teacher at the Drawing School of Association for Arts Promotion (1902-18) and at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1918-29). He was a member of the Union of Russian Artists, of the Association “Mir Iskusstva” (“World of Art”), of the Association of Revolutionary Russia Artists (АRRA); he was a founder and a member of Association named after A.I. Kuindzhi and its chairman in the period 1925-30. Among Rylov’s most famous paintings are: landscapes “Zeleny Shum” (“Rustling Leaves”) (1904), “V Golubom Prostore” (“In the Blue Sky”), “Svezhy Veter” (“Fresh Wind”) (both in 1918), “Lesnaya Reka” (“Forest River”) (1929). Rylov made illustrations to V.V. Bianki’s books. He wrote a book of sketches about nature and illustrated it with his own watercolors (“Kogda Eto Byvayet” (“When Does it Happen?”), 1936; published in 1946). Rylov was buried in St.Petersburg among the Literatorskie Mostki at the Volkovo Cemetery. In 1905 Rylov stayed at Maryino estate near Andrianovo Village (Tosno District) where he made his sketches. In 1930s he was on holiday in Shapki Settlement (Tosno District), together with artist M.V. Nesterov he several times visited academician I.P.
