Subject / Topography/Urban settlements

ROSHCHINO (Raivola [Finnish] before 1947), an urban settlement in Vyborg District. Population: 9,400. It is situated the bank of the Roschinka river (former Raivolanjoki), at the railway station of the same name of the St. Petersburg-Vyborg branch. The “Lindulovskaya Grove” reserve is situated close to R. , the Blue Lakes, a cascade of forest lakes is situated 10 km away. The toponym originates from the Finnish “raivata” meaning “to clear, to plough up.” The settlement was first mentioned in the 16th c. From the early 19th c., R. was populated, apart from the Finns, also by Russians assigned to an iron foundry. The village was subdivided into Lower Raivola (Russian) and Upper Raivola (Finnish.) It became a popular dacha area after the construction of the St. Petersburg-Vyborg railroad in 1870. In 1878-81, a church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was built (arch. I. S. Bogomolov; burned down in 1940). In 1903, a wooden church of St. Sergius of Radonezh was built (arch. A. I. Balinsky); there was also a stone Lutheran church (early 20th c.) None of the churches has survived. In the early 20th century, the settlement had two Russian and one Finnish elementary school, a telephone station, sawmill, mill, and several small factories. From 1920 till 1940, it was in the territory of Finland. In 1947-48, Raivola was successively renamed: Zhdanovsk, Ulianovsky, and finally Roshchino. In 1959, it became a workers’ (urban) settlement. R. has the Karelia cinema hall, a culture center, children’s creativity house, library, and children’s library. In 1996-97, the wooden church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was built. Since 2001, the “World Village” international folklore festival has been annually held in R. There are gardening communities in the environs of R. R. is related to the life and writings of poet E. Södergran.
