Leskov, Nikolay Semyonovich (1831-1895), a writer. Leskov learned at the Oryol High School during 1841-1846 (he did not graduate the school). During 1847-1857 Leskov worked at the Oryol Chamber of the Criminal Court and at the Kiev State Chamber. From 1857 till 1860 Leskov worked as a clerk of the trading company "Shkott and Vilkens". In 1861 Leskov moved to St. Petersburg. He started to write from 1860. He was the author of novels, narratives, stories, essays: "Ovtsebyk" ("The Musk-ox", 1862), "Zhitye odnoy babi" ("The Life of a Peasant-woman", 1863), "Nekuda" ( “Nowhere to Go”, 1864), "Ledi Makbet Mtsenskogo uezda" ("Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District", 1965), "Na nozhakh" (“At Daggers Drawn”, 1870-1871), "Soboryane" ("Cathedral Folk", 1872), "Ocharovanny strannik" ("Enchanted Wanderer", 1873), "Melochi arkhiyereyskoy zhizni" ("Details of the Orthodox Bishops' Life", 1878-1880), "Odnodum" ("A Man Thinking about Only Thing", 1879), "Nesmertelny Golovan" ("Non-fatal Golovan", 1880), "Skaz o Tulskom kosom Levshe i o stalnoy Blokhe" ("The Tale of Cross-eyed Lefty from Tula and the Steel Flea", 1881), "Tupeyny khudozhnik" (The Toupee Artist, 1883), "Chelovek na chasakh" ("The Sentry", 1887), "Administrativnaya gratsiya" ("Administrative Grace", 1893) "Zayachy remiz" ("The Rabbit Warren", 1894; it was published in 1917) and others. Leskov died in Saint Petersburg and was buried at the Literatorskiye Mostki necropolys at Volkovo Cemetery. Leskov described his impressions about visiting the Konevets Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin (Konevets island) and Keksgolm (now it is Priozersk Town) in the essay "Monasheskiye ostrova na Ladozhskom Ozere" ("Monastery Islands in Ladoga Lake", 1873) and in the story "Enchanted Wanderer".
