Chernyshevsky, Nikolay Gavrilovich (1828-1889), a writer, publicist, critic, philosopher. Chernyshevsky graduated from the St.Petersburg Iniversity History and Philology Faculty in 1850 and defended the master's thesis "Esteticheskiye otnosheniya iskusstva I deistvitelnosti" ("Aesthetic Relations of Art and Reality") in 1855. During 1854 - 1862 Chernyshevsky was the chief publicist of the magazine "Sovremennik" ("The Contemporary") in which his most important works were published. He wriote literary, critical and historic article: "Ocherki gogolevskogo perioda russkoy literaturi" ("Essays of the Russian literature Gogol's period"), "Antropologichesky printsip v philosofii" ("Anthropological Principle in Philosophy"), "Trud I kapital" ("Labour and Capital"). In June of 1862 Chernyshevsky was arrested. He was prosecuted in writing revolutionary leaflet "Barskim krestyanam ot ikh dobrozhelateley poklon" ("Regards to Lords' Peasants from Their Well-wishers") and imprisoned at the Peter and Paul Fortress where he was staying for 22 monthes. There he wrote the novel "Shto Delat?" (" A Vital Question or What Is to Be Done?"), the story "Arefyev" and others. In May of 1864 Chernyshevsky was sentenced to the penal servitude and till 1883 he was in Siberia. After returning from the exile Chernyshevsky lived in Astrakhan, then he lived in Saratov where he died and was buried. From May till August of 1860 Chernyshevsky and his family lived in Lyuban at A.L. Stobeus country house (it was not survived). There Chernyshevsky wrote notes for "Osnovania politicheskoy ekonomii" ("The Basics of Political Economy") by D. Mill. In May in Lyuban Chernyshevsky was visited by T.G. Shevchenko. T.G.
