KURBA, a settlement in Podporozhye District. Population: 368. Located in the upper reaches of the Oyat River. The name originates from the Kurba River, a left-hand tributary of the Oyat. It was founded in 1959 as a settlement for timber harvesters. It is situated in the Veps population area, in way of the Veps Forest natural park. The Russians form a significant part of the population. The settlement is connected, by a motor road, with Vinnitsi village, via which there is access to Podporozhye Town. The largest part of K. is on the left bank of the Oyat. The planning is regular; the streets consist mostly of one-storey two-apartment buildings, with a few two-storey plastered houses. Most of the residential houses have window trimmers decorated with sawn-through carving on their windows. K. has a library and culture house. In 1983, a Veps household museum was established in Kurba’s school having about 400 exhibits.
