OZERYOVO, a village in Boksitogorsk District. Located on the left bank of the Chagoda River that floods at that point forming a kind of lake (origin of the village’s name.) Population: 22. The Zabelino-Krasnaya Rechka motor road extends close to O., having access to the Novaya Ladoga-Yaroslavl route. The village emerged as an important point on the waterway from the Baltic Sea basin to the Volga and to the center of the region. 2 or 3 km west of O. there is a complex of architectural monuments: a site of the Dyakovo culture, and a group of knolls and mounds dated break of the 1st and 2nd millenniums A.D. Downstream, where the Goryun River flows into the Chagoda, there is a site and a sepulcher of the long mound culture (5th-9th cc.) In the Middle Ages, Ozeryovsky Georgiyevsky Pogost emerged. The stone church of St. George (1845-1848) on the Chagoda’s right bank has survived in O. (closed in 1934, currently under restoration); the neighboring Usadische village has a wooden church of St. Nicholas the Miracle Worker (18th c.) The icon “Nicholas with Cosmas and Damian and the Life of Nicholas” (1st half of the 14th c.) that was found there is now kept at the State Russian Museum. A monument to Alexander II was installed in O.; it was lost in the Soviet period.
