OPOLYE, a village in Kingisepp District. Population: 1066. The toponym originates from “opolye” = field edge, or elevated woodless plain. It is locate at the crossing of the Tallinn Highway and the Opolye-Volosovo-Gatchina road in the west of the Izhora Hills. First mentioned in the 1500 Rent Census Book of Vodskaya Pyatina as the center of Vozdvizhensky Opolsky Pogost in Chyud. O. has a culture house and library. The active Orthodox church of Exaltation of the Cross was built in the place of the church that had existed before 1500. The postal office building has survived (arch. L. Rusca, 1806-07.)
