Aleksandr Vilyamovich Gadlo (1937-2002) was an ethnograph, archaeologist. In 1985 he became a Doctor of History. He graduated from the historical faculty of the Leningrad State University (1961) and was a student of the academician M.I.Artamonov. He was an author of the works about the ethnic history of the North Caucasus, the problem of Caucasian and Russian links in the Middle Ages. Since 1965 he was a research assistant of the Leningrad State University, then in 1986 he became a professor and managed the work of the Caucasian archaeological and ethnographical expedition of the Leningrad State University. In the period from 1990 to 2001 he was a head of the department of ethnography and anthropology where he had been working since the date of its forming in 1968. In the 1990s he offered the program of explorations in the North-West of Russia by the employees of the department. Expeditionary groups of the department (under the direction of S.B.Yegorov, A.G.Novozhilov, A.Y.Chistyakov) worked in Volosovo, Gatchina, Kingisepp, Kirovsk, Tikhvin, Boksitogorsk districts of the Leningrad Oblast; the materials collected by the groups are kept in the archives of the department. A.Gadlo was an organizer of the annual conference of young researchers 1996-2003, "Ethnographical Studying the North-West of Russia" (1996-2003) turned into the international scientific conference "Polevaya etnografia" ("Field Ethnography") in 2004 (on the base of the history faculty of the S.Petersburg University). He was a managing editor of the joint monograph "Historical and Ethnographical Essays of Pskov Krai"( (Pskov, 1999), a member of the author team of the monography "Ethnography of the North-West of Russia" (St.Petersburg, 2004; in the co-authorship with I.I.Vernyayev, S.B.Yegorov, A.Y.Chistyakov) in which for the first time the integrated historical and ethnographical description of some volosts of Volosovo, Gatchina and Kirovsk districts of the Leningrad oblast was given.
