The Church of the Resurrection of Christ (Vazhiny Village, Podporozhsky District)

Subject / Religion. Church/Orthodox churches

The Church of the Resurrection of Christ (Vazhini Village, Podporozhsky District). The original wooden church in Vazhini Resurrection Pogost (the village of Kurpovo) was built before 1563. The church was burned by Swedes in 1581, restored in 1582. A new wooden one-domed church with a detached bell tower was built in 1630, a new warm part with side-chapels of the Prophet Elijah and St. Nicholas was built up in 1874. From 1935 the church did not work, on 30 July it was closed; the building was adapted for a kolkhoz community centre. During the period of the Finnish occupation (from 1942 until 1944) the church worked and was repaired partly. The church was opened according to the resolution of the Council of Ministers of 6 November 1946. Public worships were resumed on 10 April 1947. The carved iconostasis of the 18th century is survived. Icons from neighbouring closed churches were kept in the church podklet. In the 1980s the church was restored. It was the only working church in the North-east of the Leningrad Oblast until 1990s. A church-parish school and pilgrimage servise work under the church.
