Subject / Religion. Church/Orthodox churches

The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Mother of God of the city residence of the Pyatogorsky Convent (Gatchina Town, 3 Krasnaya Street). The city residence was founded in the place of the city estate which was presented by the peasant-trader K.K. Karpov to the Vokhonovsky Mariinsky Convent in 1895, also he gave money for building the church. The church was laid down on 3 June 1907. The Russian style church was crowned with massive onion-shaped dome and four side domes. It was remarkable for stepped composition with semicircle small arches (the design of the architect L.M. Kharlamov, with the participation of A.A. Baryshnikov). Ceilings were made of poured-in-place reinforced concrete. Icons were painted by nuns; the oaken carved iconostasis was made in a workshop of D.V. Dudarov (1913). In 1914 the main right Holy throne of St. Alexander Nevsky and the left Holy throne of St. Nicholas were consecrated. It was supposed to constructed the warm side-chapel in the name of St.John the Baptist and Lidia the Martyr in the church basement in 1917. The decoration of the church porch and plastering was not completed. An icon of the Intercession of the Mother of God, presented by Karpov (he was buried in the narthex) was honoured. The enclosed nun Maria of Gatchina, who lived not far from the cathedral, was a parishioner of the church. In 1929 the city residence, where 50 nuns lived, was closed, in 1939 the cathedral was closed, the building was adapted for a warehouse. In 1990 the cathedral was given to the parish, in 1991 the first public worship was performed. In the crypt the side-chapel of St.Ioann of Kronstadt was consecrated. The archpriest Mikhail Yurimsky, the church dean, has managed the restoration of the cathedral from 1994. Three reliquaries with particles of the holy relics of many saints (more then 70 saints) including the Apostle Andrew and the Kiev-Pecherskaya Lavra holy God-pleasers are main shrines.
