Lenizdat (the Leningrad Publishing House). The Publishing House is founded in November 1917 as the publishing house of the Petrograd Soviet, from 1919 it was called Petrogosizdat (Petrograd State Publishing House), from 1924 it was called Lengiz (Leningrad State Publishing House), from 1938 it was called Lenizdat (till 1992 it was the Publishing House of the Leningrad Oblast Committee of C.P.S.U.). From 1963 till 1992 Lenizdat had branches in the cities of Pskov and Novgorod. After the liquidation of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Lenizdat became the state publishing house. From 1992 Lenizdat is included in the Federal State Unitary Enterprise Publishing- Printing Complex "Lenizdat" ( the V. Volodarsky Printing-House is also included in the complex). At first "Lenizdat" published the mass propaganda literature, works by V.I. Lenin, K. Marx, F. Engels, books on the history-revolutionary topic, works by proletarian writers and Russian classical authors, educational literature, political posters, leaflets, newspapers. All city and oblast newspapers and more then 100 magazines were published in Lenizdat. The printing base included five printing-houses and a paper-mill. From the 1930s Lenizdat published mainly technical and agriculture literature. During World War II and the blocade of Leningrad Lenizdat continued to work, it issued leaflets, posters, series of booklets about Russian military leaders, manuals on fire fighting, market gardening etc. After the war Lenizdat issued the art, social and political, local history, popular scientific, industrial and economic and agricultural literature; fine arts production (advertisements, booklets, post cards etc.) including bookks on history and culture of the Leningrad Oblast. Among them there are "Pamyatniye mesta Leningradskoy Oblasti" ("Memorial Places of the Leningrad Oblast", 1959), "Pesni Leningradskoy oblasti" ("Songs of the Leningrad Oblast", 1978), "Skazki Leningradskoy oblasti" ("Tales of the Leningrad Oblast", 1976), "Dostoprimechtelnosti Leningradskoy oblasti" ("Sights of the Leningrad Oblast", 1977), "Arkheologicheskiye pamyatniki Leningradskoy oblasti" ("Archeological Memorials of the Leningrad Oblast", 1977), "Leningradskaya oblast: Istorichesky ocherk" ("The Leningrad Oblast: the Histioric Essay", 1986) and others; in series "Goroda Leningradskoy oblasti" ("Towns of the Leningrad Oblast") there are books about Boksitogorsk and Pikolyevo (1983), Volkhov (1961), Vsevolozhsk (1975), Vyborg (1958), Gatchina (1965), Kirovsk (1974), Lodrynoye Pole (1964), Luga (1964), Lyuban (1979), Podporozhye (1986), Priozersk (1975), Slantsi (1964), Sosnovy Bor (1982), Tikhvin (1984), Tosno (1974). Local materials are also included in series of booklets that has information abourt the experience of advanced kolkhozes, sovkhozes and machine and tractor stations of the oblast. They are "Bibliotechka kolkhoznika" ("The Library of a Kolkhoznik"), "Bibliotechka rabochego sovkhoza" ("The Library of Sovkhoz Worker"), "Bibliotechka mekhanizatora" ("The Library of a Machine-operator"), "Peredoviki selskogo khozyaistva" ("Pace-makers of Agriculture"), "Rasskazi peredovikov zhivotnovodsva" ("Stories of the Cattle Breeding Pace-makers"). On the present days Lenizdat publishes fiction, children's literature, а reference books, technical literature (including medical literature), popular scientific literature. Lenizdat publishes about 200 titles in all with the total circulation 2-3 million copies. The Publishing House was placed in the Smolny, then it was placed in the Book House (28 Nevski Prospekt), from 1963 it was placed at the special built house (59 the Fontanka Embankment) got the name "The House of Press". ;
