THE LYUBAN TOWN LIBRARY (8 Moskovskoye Shosse, Lyuban Town). The library took over from public reading library, which was opened in 1903 by uyezd Committee of Trust on Public Sobrienty in cooperation with Zemstvo administration of Novgorod Province. The first one to be in charge of the library was M. P. Petrov, a teacher. The library was reopened in November 1944, after the liberation of Lyuban Town from the Nazi invaders. Since 1976 it had a status of a branch within Tosno centralized library network. The library’s fund numbers 12,000 items, with 1,500 readers and over 30,000 loans annually. The library stores the materials from the archive of G. F. Chekur, local historian of Lyuban Town . Since 1990 the library carries on independent work of collecting materials related to local history; it runs a mini-museum with a permanent exhibition “Provintsia… Poteryanny, nevozvrashchenny ray” (The Provinces… Paradise Lost and Never Recovered). The library is also a venue for “Lyubanskie kraevedcheskie chteniya” (Lyuban Town Area Study Readings). Its activities in the sphere of local history are covered by local mass media, programmes of Leningrad Oblast Television Company and the “Gardarika” radio station.
