Topography/Administrative - territorial division
PYATINAS, adm. and territorial regions of the core Novgorod Land as part of a united Russian State in the late 15th – 17th century. They are known from written sources (scribe rolls and deeds) from the late 15th century. There were five P. altogether (hence the name, from Rus. pyat “five”): Bezhetskaya, Vodskaya, Derevskaya, Obonezhskaya, and Shelonskaya. In the mid-16th century, the P. were subdivided into halves: Bezhetskaya, into Belozerskaya and Tverskaya, Vodskaya, into Korelskaya and Poluzhskaya, Derevskaya, into Grigorieva Morozova and Zhikhoreva Ryapchikova, Obonezhskaya, into Nagornaya and Zaonezhskaya, and Shelonskaya, into Zarusskaya and Zalesskaya. Bezhetskaya P. was located between the Msta River and left-hand tributaries of the Volga, Vodskaya P. occupied the interfluve of the Volkhov and Luga Rivers and lands north of them, Derevskaya P. was between the Lovat River and Msta River, Obonezhskaya P., around Lake Onega and in adjacent lands, and Shelonskaya P., between the Luga River and Lovat River. P. consisted of local adm. entities, pogosts and volosts. In the 16th and 17th century, the areas of Vodskaya, Shelonskaya, and Obonezhskaya P. were changing due to Russian-Swedish wars. Apart from the pyatina-based, uyezd-based division was developing in parallel. The pyatina-based division existed until the gubernia-based adm. reform of 1708. Several researchers believe that the division into P. was related to the territorial division of Novgorod, which consisted of five “ends” (districts.) Their existence was determined by evolution of Novgorod from independent settlements. Three P. began from Novgorod and extended as radial strips in all directions. Derevskaya P. began near Novgorod, while Bezhetskaya P. was geographically separated from it. The predecessors of P. were territorial structures that were called hundreds or lands. For instance, the “Vochskaya Hundred” was known in the region of the future Vodskaya P. in the 1260s, and Vodskaya Land was mentioned in the 1330s (see Vodskaya Land.) In the extreme west and south-west of the current Leningrad Oblast were lands of Shelonskaya P., other western and central regions and a part of the Karelian Isthmus belonged to Vodskaya P., the eastern part of the Oblast beyond the Volkhov River was within Obonezhskaya P., and just a few pogosts in the south-east belonged to Bezhetskaya P.
