KIROVSK DISTRICT, a part of Leningrad Oblast. Area: 2590.9 sq. km. Population: 97,000. Located in the central part of Leningrad Oblast. In the north, it borders the Lake Ladoga coast; in the north-west and west, Vsevolozhsk District, in the west, St. Petersburg, in the south-west and south, Tosno District, in the south-east, Kirishi District, and in the east and north-east, Volkhov District. It was established on 1 April 1977 to include adjacent parts of Tosno and Volkhov Districts. K. D. comprises 102 rural localities united into 3 rural settlements, and 8 urban settlements, in particular Otradnoye and Schlusselburg towns and Mga, Naziya, Pavlovo, Priladozhsky, and Sinyavino urban settlements. Adm. center: Kirovsk Town. The St. Petersburg-Novaya Ladoga motor road extends in the north of the district, while the network of local-level roads is more developed in the west and east. Railway lines extend across the district, the most important of them being routes from St. Petersburg to Volkhovstroy and Kirishi. Waterway communication is provided along the Neva and the Novoladozhsky Canal. As regards archeology, the district’s territory is poorly studied. It was populated probably in the late Stone Age, although just some medieval relics have been discovered. The toponymy of a Baltic Finnish origin witnesses a pre-Slav population of the region. The Slav colonization of the land started in the 14th century, with the fortress of Oreshek appearing at the source of the Neva. In the 17th century, the region was a frontier zone between Sweden and Russia. In the 18th century, the Ladoga Canal was built there, and estates of nobility appeared; in the 19th century, the Novoladozhsky Canal was constructed; the 20th century was the time of intense industrial development, with new urban communities, and dacha areas of Leningrad’s residents. During WW2, in 1941-43, the district’s area was the place of fierce battles. K. D. has several architectural monuments. The most ancient of them is the Oreshek Fortress (see Schlusselburg Fortress.) The Pella post office building in Otradnoye Town is dated the 18th century (see Pella, Palace Ensemble.) Some Orthodox churches of the 18th and 19th cc. have preserved, such as St. Nicholas’ Church in Verola village, the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Kobona village, and Church of Our Lady of Tikhvin in Putilovo village. The Ladoga Canals are a monument of waterworks architecture. The district has 39 monuments, obelisks, and common graves related to events of WW2, in particular the “Nevsky Spot”, museum and obelisk in honor of the meeting of warriors of the Volkhov and Leningrad Fronts during the breaking of the siege on 18 January 1943. The district also has the “Breach of the Leningrad Siege” reserve museum, and the A. A. Prokofiev museum in Kobona village. K. D. has 22 cultural institutions, Kirovsk central inter-settlement library with 17 branches, 6 children’s schools of music and art, and a park of culture and rest. Touring is successfully developing.
