THE TOSNO CENTRAL DISTRICT LIBRARY (27 Lenina Prospekt, Tosno Town). Free public reading library, from which Tosno Town library took over, was opened in Tosno Village by the Tsarskoye Selo Uyezd Committee of Trust on Public Sobriety . After the revolution of 1917 it worked as a uyezd reading library, then as Tosno district library. In the years of the Great Patriotic War the library was closed, and was opened again in 1944. In 1976 it was put in charge of the district centralized library network. Since 2006 it has had the status of an inter-settlement library. Its general-purpose fund numbers over 70,000 items, with 182,000 loans annually. The library has around 7,000 readers, with 46,000 visits a year. Of special value is the local history fund, which includes documents and photographs related to the history of the region, the local zemstvo, churches, estates, etc., as well as the filing of the district newspaper (since the second half of 1944). Between 1986 and 1992 the library served as experimental ground for State Public Library named after M. Y. Saltykov-Shchedrin, where the new method of organizing exhibitions was tested. The library is actively involved in work on the local history. From 1993 to 1995 the library ran a 3-year local history seminar for librarians, since 1997 it has organized annual local history readings. The library has published numerous brochures on the history of old country estates, books on environment issues (including the Krasny Bor testing ground), about Sablinsky Waterfall and the caves, literary-and-art collection “Ya zdes’ zhivu, i kray mne jetot dorog” (I Live Here and Love this Land) (2005). The library was one of the first to design and publish a CD on the history of Maryino country estate with the title “Tam, gde roskosh’ obitala…” (Where There Was Luxury…). The library’s work in the area of providing environmental education for the community made it a winner of All-Russian library contest in 1996; it was also awarded in All-Russian contest “Trudovaya slava Rossii” (The Russian Glory of Labour) (2001) and took the first place among the Leningrad Oblast libraries in the 2003 local history contest.
