Zakhozhskoye lace

Subject / Art/Art trades and crafts

ZAKHOZHSKOYE LACE, bobbin lace, composing a special group of Russian decorative lace. Historically formed name "Zakhonskoye" is connected with locality Zakhonye, which in the end of the XIXc. united several settlements of Gorodishche Volost, Novaya Ladoga Uezd, St.Petersburg Gubernia (Motokovo, Nivinka, Dunyakovo, Vitka, Pchevushka Villages, etc.). It is supposed that lace started to be woven there in the end of XVIIIc. – beginning of the XIX c. as imitation of metal weaving (local lace makers call the lace "Galunets", "Galun" – the names of pieces woven of gold and silver threads), but it was made of thin flax threads. In the last quarter of the XIX c. flax was put out by factory-made cotton threads. Items were mostly produced in big size: bedspreads, lace pillow covers, women dresses, coats, scarves and kerchiefs. Measuring lace was used as decoration for wedding towels, sheets, shirts, curtains, etc. Sometimes coloured threads were used while making white lace. It was typical for Zakhonskoye lace to use patterns with local motifs: wide round flowers, named "Medvezhja Lapa" ("Bear's Paw"), with 5 or 7 petals, circles, spattles, etc. In winter lace was woven not only by women but also by men. In 1870s Zakhonskoye lace became a good for sale. In 1920s cooperatives of women lace makers were set up. In 1926 Dunyashinsky cooperative regulations were issued, in 1929 the cooperative was named "Krasny Oktyabr" ("Red October") and joined Production Union. Later the lace was named "Kirishskoye" after the district centre Kirishy Town. Nowadays lace making craft is taught at college N16 in Kirishy Town, also there is a lace making group at Kirishy Town Palace of Arts for the Young. A significant collection of Zakhonskoye lace samples (about 300 items) can be found in the funds of Kirishy Town local history museum.
