Ioann of Kronstadt (Ivan Ilyich Sergiyev; 1829-1908), Saint, clergy figure. Ioann of Kronstadt was a famous preacher and ecclesiastical writer. He graduated with honours from the Arkhangelsk Ecclesiastical College, Seminary in 1851 and the St. Petersburg Ecclesiastical Academy in 1855 as a Doctor of Theology. From 12 December 1855 Ioann was a priest of the Cathedral of St. Andrey in Kronstadt, from 26 April 1875 he was an archpriest, from 8 February 1895 until his death he was the dean of the cathedral. From 1857 Ioann worked as God's Law teacher in the Kronstadt Town College and from 1862 he was also God's Law teacher in the Kronstadt Town Gymnasium. From the 1800s Ioann of Krostadt became famous in Russia and abroad. Ioann of Kronstadt, the only spiritual overseer of the Russian Orthodox Church, was given the right to perform common confessions. About 80 thousand of pilgrims came to Ioann to Kronstadt every year. Using collected donations, Ioann of Kronstadt opened the first in Russia Houses of Diligence (it was opened in Kronstadt in 1882), day nurseries, alms-houses, doss-houses and other charitable establishments. From 1893 Ioann Kronstadsky was an honour member of the St. Petersburg Ecclesiastical Academy. On 6 May 1899 he was awarded a mitre, on 9 December 1905 he was awarded the order of Saint Prince Alexander Nevsky. Ioann Kronstadsky founded more than 30 monasteries. Within the bounds of the St. Petersburg Eparchy he took part in building churches and consecrated some tens churches including the Lintulsky Convent of the Holy Trinity (1895), the Padansky Convent of the Presentation in the Temple (1897), the Porechensky Convent of the Intercession of the Mother of God as well as some churches in the town of Oraniyenbaum and its environments, a church in the village of Penino. Ioann Kronstadtsky died in Krontadt. He was buried on 23 December 1908 in the church-burialvault of St. Prophet Elijah and Tsarina Theodora of the Convent of St. Ioann founded by him in St. Petersburg. Ioann Krostadsky was canonized at the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church on 8 June 1990. The memorial flat of Ioann Kronstadsky was opened in Kronstadt.
