Subject / Religion. Church/Orthodox churches

The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God (Novaya Ladoga Town, 49 Karl Marks Prospekt). The cathedral was built (possibly in the middle of the 16th century) as a refectory church of the Medvedkovsky Monastery of St . Nicholas. Limestone slabs and brick were used as building material. The cathedral was consecrated in the name of St. Apostle John the Theologian. In 1702 the cathedral was renewed, it was warm church of the city cathedral of St. Nicholas. A column-shaped octahedral 40-metre bell tower was built up from the western side during 1759-1756. The biggest bell (one from 12 bells of the bell tower), the weight about seven tons, was cast by N.M. Stukolkin in 1845. In the 1870s under the dean archpriest Matthew Rozanov the cathedral was rebuilt from the foundation (according to the project of the architect M.A. Shchurupov) and consecrated in 1877. The side-chapel of the Nativity of the Mother of God was rebuilt from the former refectory during 1733-1734. After the cathedral reconstruction the Nativity side-chapel bacame larger then the old main cathedral. The new four-tier carved iconostasis in the "Russo-Roman style" was made for it (there were 47 icons, 43 icons were painted by V.M. Peshekhonov; lower tier are partly survived). In 1935 the cathedral was closed, after 1949 it was restored. Among the cathedral objects of worship there are an ancient Cruscifix, the Icon of the Coronation of the Mother of God, the Icon of the Mother of God "Consolation of All Who Sorrow", the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God, the icon of the "Three-handed" Mother of God and others; from 1889 the Icon of St. Panteleimon from mount Athos and the Icon of St. Prince Vladimir in the memory of the 900th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus have been placed in the cathedral.
