PASHA, river, left-hand tributary of the Svir River. Length: 242 km. The average flow rate in the mouth is 69.2 cu. m/s, catchment area: 6650 sq. km. It flows out of Lake Pashozero in the east of Leningrad Oblast, and crosses Tikhvin and Volkhov Districts. The initial stream direction is from north-east to south-west. Near Novoye Selo village of Tikhvin District it makes a turn and flows northward; near Bor village of Volkhov District it deviates to the north-west, and flows into the Svir near Sviritsa settlement. The largest tributaries are Bolshaya Pyalyitsa, Chornaya, Verkhnyaya Paluitsa, Shuiga, Pit’, Yavosma, Kapsha, Pinega, Sapa, Suksa, Shizhnya, Kondega, Rybezhka, Kumbito, Babya. The river’s name probably originates from the Baltic Finnish “paksu” = fat, thick. Concentrated along the banks of P. and its tributaries are groups of burial mounds of the Ladoga Coast culture of the late 1st and early 2nd millenniums A. D. The large settlements in the basin of P. are Pashozero, Shugozero, Gorka, Koskovo, Chasovenskoye, Rybezhno, Pasha, Sviritsa. Some of them have been known from written sources since the 14th-16th cc. The upper reach of the Kapsha, right-hand tributary of P., is the aboriginal settlement area of the Kapsha group of the Vepses. These lands, as well as the sources of P., are included in the" Veps Forest" natural reserve.
