SVIR, a river in the north-east of Leningrad Oblast. Length: 224 km. Average flow rate at the mouth: 780 cu. m/s, catchment area: 84,400 sq. km. It flows from Lake Onega at its south-western end, crosses Podporozhye and Lodeynoye Pole Districts, and it flows into the Svir Bay of Lake Ladoga near Sviritsa settlement. The general stream direction is from north-east to south-west. The main tributaries are Kuzra, Svyatukha, Ivina, Ostrechinka, Shakshozerka, Vazhinka, Uslanka, Mandroga, Yandeba, Yanega, Kanomka, Shamoksha, Shotkusa, Oyat, Pasha. It is supposed that the river’s originates from the Baltic Finnish languages, and means literally “deep lake” (“syvä” = deep, “jarvi” = lake.) Since the late 1st millennium A. D., S. served as a major transport route connecting the Baltic basin to the northern and north-western regions of Eastern Europe. The first settlements on S. are mentioned in written sources in the 12th century. The dams of hydro powerplants built in the mid-20th century (see Upper Svir Hydro Powerplant) raised the water level, covered the rapids, and an artificial water reservoir of 183 sq. km in area appeared at the confluence of the Ivina River and S. The river is navigable in all its length, forming part of the Volga-Baltic Waterway. There are many islands in the river. Located on the banks of S. are the towns of Podporozhye and Lodeynoye Pole, and urban settlements of Voznesenye, Nikolsky, Vazhiny, and Svirstroy; the Lower Svir ornithology reserve exists in the lower reach. There are monuments of wooden architecture of the 17th-19th cc. in the river’s basin. Among them are the Church of Nativity of the Mother of God in Gimreka village, the Church of St. George in Shustruchei village, the Church of St. Nicholas in Sogintsi village. In the lower reach basin of S. there is the ensemble of the Monastery of Alexander of Svir that was founded in the 15th century.
