KIRISHI, town, adm. center of Kirishi District. It is situated at the crossing of the Mga-Pestovo and Volkhovstroy-Chudovo railway lines. Motor roads connect K. to the Novaya Ladoga-Murmansk and St. Petersburg-Moscow routes. The name is related to the name of the Kiresha River (currently Kirisha), a right-hand tributary of the Volkhov, which is probably of a pre-Slav origin. K. village was first mentioned in written sources in 1693. From the early 18th c. till the early 20th c., it was in Soltsi Volost of Novaya Ladoga Uyezd, St. Petersburg Gubernia. In 1931 it became a workers’ settlement with the timber and construction industries developing. During WWII it was occupied (1941-43) and destroyed. In the 1960s, due to the construction of an oil refinery and a district powerplant, active restoration of K. started. In 1965, the settlement was given the status of a town and became the center of the district of the same name. The town is built up with up-to-date residential and public buildings, and has a regular planning structure. K. has a Palace of Culture, youth center, Palace of Children’s (Youth) Creativity, children’s school of arts, central district library, Kirishi town library, central children’s library and town children’s library, and a picture gallery. “Radio Kirishi” operates, and the Information & Advertizing Center publishes the “Kirishsky Fakel” newspaper and makes TV broadcasts. The Kirishi museum of the local history has a permanent exposition and presents various exhibitions. Since 1996, the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God has been constructed in K.
