Industrial architecture

Subject / Architecture

Industrial architecture. Study of structural and functional features of the production constructions in terms of their aesthetic expression started recently. On the material of the Leningrad region of such studies have not yet done. A small number of extant buildings for industrial use 19th-20th centuries could explain to the need of reconstruction and renovation of existing production. Staraya Ladoga (Petrovsky) channel, whose construction was started in 1719, is the oldest technological facilities in the region. The canal ( length 104 verst) goes parallel to the southern shore of Lake Ladoga. The main role in his construction played B.K. Minich, who led the construction in 1724-31. Near the town of Novaya Ladoga remained faced granite entrance (the so-called Catherine estuary) and three floodgates (Krasnoshlyuzny, Krivokolennyi and Belozerskiy), which were built in the time of reconstruction of the canal in 1764-67. In 1861-67 was dug Novoladogskiy (Alexandrovskiy) canal, who, like the Petrovskiy Canal, connecting the New Ladoga and the Shlisselburg Town. Until our days survived the bridge "on the columns" and four-chamber granite gateway at the exit of the old channel of the Neva (1836, the architect P.P. Bazen). Logic and clarity of the forms are distinguish the early classicism monuments which survived to our time, such as building of the paper factory in the village Ropsha (1788-94, the architect Y.M. Felten). There are two workers of the village which were built in the 19th century.
One of them is located in the village Druzhnaya Gorka. The main street of the village form the durable houses, which were built for the masters glassblowers of the plant Riting (founded in 1801). Until recently the factory office building was retained (1862; completely burned down in 1998). The village "Parusinka" in the southern part of the Ivangorod Town is a complex of buildings flax-jute factory A.L. Stiglitz and brick houses that were built to worker in the 1850's.
The complexes of the first Soviet power plants built by the project G.O. Graftio (Volhovskaya (1926) and Nizhnesvirsky (1933) power plants) are the outstanding monuments of their time.
Both plants are brilliant examples of constructivism. The 8 th thermoelectric power station, which worked on peat (built 1929), is the model of constructivism. The history of the modern Kirovsk town was started from the construction thermoelectric power station. The rectangular building thermoelectric power station in the rhythm of vertical articulation connected in the dynamic composition, which determine the silhouette of the seven trumpets. They are visible from afar in a panorama of the left bank of the Neva. Very expressive looks the mill industrial complex and grain industrial complex on the Morskaya promenade in the Vyborg town (1931, architect E. Huttunen). The complex has cylinders elevator with strong verticals. In 1932 in the Volkhov town was built the country's first aluminum smelter. Electrolysis plant, whose facade is divided into cells of rectangular window openings, was built in-situ reinforced concrete on the project, N.E. Lanceray. Major construction projects of the postwar period in the Leningrad Oblast: plant "Phosphorit" in Kingisepp (first turn - 1963), Kirishi oil refinery (1966), the Leningrad nuclear power plant in the Sosnovuy Bor town (the first unit - 1973). The scale of these buildings, with their fundamental technological and functionalist affect add some sign character in the places of their location.
