KIPRENSKY, Orest Adamovich (1782, country house in Nezhinskaya Village; modern Nezhnovo Village, Kingisepp District – 1836), artist, a founder of romanticism in Russian painting. He was an illegitimate son of a serf woman and a landlord A.S. Dyakonov. Soon after his birth he was given his freedom and baptized in Koporye Village (hence his initial family name “Koporsky” changed to “Kiprensky” – in honour of Kiprida, a love goddess). His early childhood Kiprensky spent in the family of a serf A. Schwalbe, a husband of his mother. In the period 1788–1803 he lived in St.Patersburg and studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under the guidance of G.I. Ugryumov, D.G. Levitsky, G.F. Duaynen. He became an academician in 1812, a professor of the Academy in 1831. In the period 1816-23 Kiprensky toured Germany, Switzerland, Italy, receiving an Imperial scholarship given by Empress Elisabeth Alekseyevna. Kiprensky is an author of numerous portraits: “Leib Gvardiy Polkovnik Y.V. Davydov”(“Life-Guards Colonel Y.V. Davydov”) (1809), “Y.Y. Avdulina”(1822-23), “Grafinya Y.P. Rastopchina” (“Countess Y.P. Rastopchina”) (1809), “A.S. Pushkin” (1827), “Avtoportret”(“Self-Portrait”) (1828). Kiprensky painted pictures on historical and mythological subjects. He many times visited Nezhinskaya Village, there he painted portraits of A. Schwalbe , of a new owner of the country house – Brigadier G.I. Zhukov (both in 1804), self-portrait (1808), etc. In Uspenskoye estate (Staraya Ladoga Village) Кiprensky painted portraits of A.R. Tomilov, the estate owner, (1808) and of his family members (1812, 1814). He often visited Olenins’ estate Priyutino. There he created graphic portraits of I.A. Krylov and I.I. Kozlov (both in 1813). In 1827 Kiprensky visited Kotly estate, where he painted a portrait of K.I. Albrecht. In 1828 he moved to Italy. Kiprensky died in Rome and was buried in the cemetery of the Church Sante Andrea delle Fratte. A memorial plaque in honour of Kiprensky was put up in Nezhnovo Village.
