SYASSTROY, a town in Volkhov District. Population: 13,700. It situated in the lower reach of the Syas River, where the Valgomka flows into it. The etymology of the name is typical for settlements attached to industrial facilities erected in the 1920s. It appeared in 1926 during the construction of the Syas Pulp & Paper Mill on the site of the former Nosok village. From 1927, a workers’ settlement. It was granted the status of a town in 1992. 7 km east of the town, Lungachi railway station is located (on the Volkhov-Petrozavodsk line), to which the town is connected with a branch. North-eastwards from S., after Selivanovo village, a narrow-gage railroad extends. The town is crossed by the Novaya Ladoga-Murmansk highway, and by the Staroladozhsky and Novoladozhsky Canals. The architecture of S. is typical for a Soviet industrial settlement. There is a monument to Hero of the Soviet Union P. Lavrov. Currently, the stone church of the Assumption (1751) is under restoration. The town has a culture center, and children’s schools of arts and music. In 2002, a family reading library was opened. The local choir of veterans was awarded the title of a folk amateur company. The Syas Pulp & Paper Mill supports a museum of the mill’s history.
