Kikerino, urban settlement

Subject / Topography/Urban settlements

KIKERINO, an urban settlement in Volosovo District. Population: 2,000. It is situated at the Bolshiye Kolpany-Volosovo road. The name is probably related to the Baltic Finnish last name Kekki (Kekke.) The toponym K. is mentioned in Novgorod’s 1499/1500 scribe roll (currently there exist Bolshoye Kikerino and Maloye Kikerino villages near K.) The settlement of K. as such appeared at the railway station of the same name of the Gatchina-Ivangorod branch (opened in 1870.) In 1906, P. K. Vaulin opened a Geldwein-Vaulin ceramic workshop in K. on the base of the brick factory that had existed in K. from 1878. The workshop made facing tiles broadly used in house finishing in St. Petersburg, as well as stove and fireplace Dutch tiles, vases, icon cases, and majolica icons (see Vaulin ceramic factory.) K. had wooden churches that belonged to the Virgin Mary Monastery at Pyataya Gora: the Church of the Kalan Icon of the Mother of God (1902-03; burned down in 1907), the Church of the Transfiguration (1907-09, arch. V. A. Vorotilov; closed in 1939; defunct.) In the early 20th c., a wooden church of St. Nicholas was built in K. (returned to the community in 1993.) The settlement has a culture center and a library. In 1997, under an agreement between Finland and the government of Leningrad Oblast, a hostel (old people’s home) for 24 persons from Ingermanlandian Finns was opened in K.
