Nabokov, Vladimir Vladimirovich (1899- 1977), a writer, translator, literary critic. V.V. Nabokov got the homw education, from 1911 he attended at the Tenishevsky College, in summer he lived in the family estates in the Gatchina Uyezd of the St. Petersburg Gubernia (villages of Vyra, Batovo, Rozhdestveno). His childhood climate was described in his autobiography "Drugiye berega" ("Other Banks") (the English versions "Conclusive evidence", 1951; «Speak, memory», 1966; the Russian version - 1954). In 1919 Nabokov emigrated and till 1922 he attended the Cambridge University, then he lived Germany (during 1923-1937), in France (1937-1940), in the USA (1940-1960), in Switzerland (1960-1977). During 1948-1959 Habokov was a professor of the Cornell University. His first poet collection was published in 1914. V.V. Nabokov is the author of novels "Mashenka" ("Mary", 1926), "Korol, dama, valet" ("King, Queen, Knave", 1928), "Zashchita Luzhina" ("The Defense", 1930), "Otchayaniye" ("Despair", 1930-1931), "Podvig" ("Glory", 1932), "Kamera Obskura" ("Camera Obscura", 1932), "Prigkasheniye na kazn" ("Invitation to a Beheading", 1935-1936), "Dar" ("The Gift", 1937-1938). From 1938 Nabokov started to write novels in English ("Podlinnaya zhizn Sebastiana Nayta" ("The Real Life of Sebastian Knight"), "Pod znakom nezakonnorozhdennykh" ("Bend Sinister"), "Pnin", "Lolita", "Prozrachniye veshchi" ("Transparent Things"), "Posmotri na arlekinov" ("Look at the Harlequins")). Nabokov translated "Slovo o polku Igoreve" (The Song of Igor's Campaign") and "Eugeny Onegin" in English. In 1974 the exhibition "Nabokov in the Motherland" was opened at the Rukavishnikovs' manor -house in Rozhdestveno village of the Gatchina District. On present days the History and Literature Museum of V.V. Nabokov is placed at the manor-house (see the article "Rozhdestveno, the estate museum of V.V. Nabokov").
