VINNITSI, a village in Podporozhye District. Population: 2158. It is located in the upper reach of the Oyat River. Veps name: Vingl. It is supposed that the Russian name of the village is related to the Veps word “venianik” = Russian. Current population: Russians and Vepses. It is connected to Podporozhye and other localities of the district by a motor road. First mentioned as “the Pogost at Vyunitse” in a supplement to the Statute of Prince Svyatoslav Igorevich (1137). The scribe rolls of the late 15th and 16th cc. define it as Venitsky Pogost. In the 18th – early 20th cc. it was a volost center. It became a district center in the new-established Leningrad Oblast (until the cancellation of Vinnitsi District in 1963.) The current area of the village was formed in the 20th century as a result of the actual fusion of several villages that extended for five kilometers along the Oyat River valley. Due to the very rugged terrain, the buildings are arranged to suit the landscape; mainly, they are one- or two-storey wooden houses. A group of medieval moulds of the 11th-13th cc. is in the center of V. In the former pogost area, the wooden church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin has survived (currently under restoration.) The Orthodox church of the Smolensk Icon of Our Lady is active. The village has a library and a culture center, on the basis of which the Veps Folklore Center is established. It presents the “We Are Vepses” ethnographic exposition, and combines several hobby groups, studios, and amateur art companies, incl. Veps Puppet Theater, Armas folk ensemble, The Merry Spring children’s folk group etc. Since 1987, the all-Veps “Life Tree” (“Yelon pu”) festival has been held in V. annually in the last ten days of June; its program contains the performances of folk groups and selling - exhibitions of folk craftsmen’s articles.
