Peter (Pyotr) Teodor Shvindt (1851, Putoria Estate in Räisälä; now Melnikovo Settlement in Priozresk District - 1917) was an archaeologist, ethnographer, folklorist. He finished a grammar school in the town of Vyborg, studied in the Polytechnic Institute (now the Helsinki University of Technology), from 1883 to 1885 he studied in the Helsingfors University, in 1885 he became a Master of the Humanities. When he studied in the grammar school he was keen on the past of the Karelian Isthmus, tried to carry out excavations in Putoria Estate. In 1877 the Society of Finnish Antiquities gave Shvindt a grant for exploring Keksholm Uyezd. During seven years (including intervals) Shvindt was doing excavations on the territory of the Old Fortress in Keksholm, in the second half of the 1880s - the beginning of the 1890s he was carrying out excavations and ethnographical researches in the Northwestern Priladozhye (Kurkijoki, Sortavala), on the Karelian Isthmus (Keksholm/ now Priozersk, Sakkola/now Gromovo, Pyhäjärvi/now Otradnoye, Rautu/npw Sosnovo, Valkjarvi/now Michurinskoye). In 1914 together with Y.G.Rinne he explored the fortress of Tiversk Gorodok. On Shvindt's initiative in 1894 in Keksholm the ethnography museum was opened. From 1893 to 1917 Shvindt worked as a curator of the Archaeological Committee. Shvindt's finds are in the collections of the National Museum of Finland (Helsinki), Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Science named after Peter the Great (the Kunstkamera) (the collection collected in the period from 1895 to 1896 by the program of V.V.Radlov, the director of the Kunstkamera). In 2001 in Priozersk Town the International scientific and educational conference devoted the 150th anniversary of Shvindt' birth was held.
