Staraya Ladoga Monastery of St. John the Precurser
Staraya Ladoga Monastery of St. John the Precurserthe Staraya Ladoga Monastery of St. John the Precurser (Ivansky, Ivanovsky). It was founded on Malysheva Mountain (the northern part of Ladoga Lake) probably by Clement , the archbishop of Novgorod (he governed the eparchy during 1276-1299). The monastery was not closed in the Troubled Times. The stone church of the Birth of St. John the Precurser was built in 1695. The appearance of the church is archaic and fit the traditions of the 16th century. A pillar-shaped bell tower (crowned with a spire in the 18th century) was connected with the antechurch at the southern entrance. At the northern side there was the warm side-chapel of St. parasceva the Great Martyr. In 1704 monks of the Medvedkovo Monastery of St. Nocholas were moved to the Staraya Ladoga Monastery. In 1764 the monastery was transformed into a parish. Aleksander Losev, an ascetic and "Christ's fool", was buried in the antetemple in 1848. The monastery was closed in 1919, the church was closed in the 1930s. The only survived church of St. John the Precurser was relinquished to the eparchy in 1991 as the parish church. The restoration was begun by the hieromonk Eustasius (Zhakov). The inner decoration was lost, fragments of the paintings of the 19th century under the dome were survived in the summer temple. There are Holy images of the Tikhvin icon of the Mother of God and the icon of St. Nilus of Stolbny among new objects of worships. The church is decirated with new paintings in the refectory, with embroideries and forged decorations. Authors
