After 1764 during a church reform of Catherine II landed properties were taken from the orthodox monasteries, some of them were closed (The Peredolsky Monastery, Ozersky Monastery, Posolotin Monastery, Shchirsky Monastery and others). In the late 19th - early 20th century some of the monasteries were opened again, particularly, the Monastery of the Resurrection and the Hermitage of Cornelius Padansky (see the Padansky Convent of the Presentation in the Temple); some new monasteries were founded: Vokhono Convent of St. Mary-Magdalene, Pyatigorsk Convent of the Mother of God, the Tvorozhkovsky Monastery, the Monastery of the Resurection and the Patronage of the Mother of God and others, in 1919 the Porechsky Convent of the Patronage of the Mother of God was founded. After the Revolution the Orthodox monasteries were begun to close and clergymen began to be subjected to repressions. From the late 1920s repressions became stronger, the last Othodox monasteries were closed; on the oblast territory it was the Monastery of the Resurection (it was closed in February 1932). During World War II the Dormition Convent (11 nuns) and the Theophany Monastery (7 monks) were opened in the settlement Vyritsa on the territory of the occupied Leningrad Oblast under the aegis of the Pskov Ecclesiastical Mission, they were closed in 1944. The revival of the Orthodox monasteries was begun in the 1990s, some monasteries were opened in the Oblast: the Konevets Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (in 1991), the Zelenets Monastery of the Holy Trinity (in 1993), the Oyat Convent of the Presentation in the Temple (in 1993), the Tikhvin Monastery of the Holy Dormition (1995), the Cheremenets Monastery of St. John the Theologian (1993, 1997), the Tervenichi Convent of the Patronage of the Mother of God (1996-1997), the Holy Trinity Monastery of St. Alexander of Svir (1998), the Staraya Ladoga Monastery of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (2004) and the Staraya Ladoga Convent of the Dormition (2005).
