The first local history exhibition was founded in 1894 in the Round (Pugachev's) Tower of the Keksholm citadel acoording the initiative of the Finnish archaeologist and ethnographer T. Swindt. During 1936-1939 the new building of the Kyakisalmsky Museum was built according to the project of the architect T. Anttilla at the place where the New Arsenal (of the 16th century) was located.
