“TEATRALNAYA VESNA” (“THEATRE SPRING”), oblast festival. It is held once in two years. The first festival of the Leningrad Oblast amateur theatre performances was held in Luga Town in May 1980. There were four theatres-participants: from Luga Town, Staraya Ladoga Village, Tikhvin Town and Kingisepp Town. In 1986 the festival was organized in Kingisepp Town, in 1988, 1990 and 1992 in Lodeinoye Pole Town. Since 1994 the festival has been held in Luga Town on the base of Town Centre of Social and Cultural Activities. The festival is held on the initiative and with support of the Culture Committee under the Leningrad Oblast Government, the Leningrad Oblast Education and Methodology Centre of Culture and Art, the St.Petersburg Branch of the Russian Federation Union of Theatre Workers, Administration of Municipal Institution “Luzhsky Raion” (“Luga District”). The festival Jury consists of the St.Petersburg leading theatre critics, professors and teachers of art universities, directors and creative directors of professional theatres. The oblast amateur theatres perform plays based on the works written by Russian and foreign classic writers and modern playwrights. Traditionally, no first prizes are given, most part of participants get diplomas in one of nominations: “Luchshy Spektakl ”(“The Best Performance”), “Luchshaya Rezhissura” (“The Best Direction”), “Luchshy Aktersky Ansambl” (“The Best Cast”), “Luchshaya Muzhskaya/Zhenskaya Rol” (“The Best Actor/Actress”), “Za Rezhissersky Debut” (“The Best Director’s Debut”), “Za Luchshiye Kostyumy” (“The Best Costumes”), etc. Since 2004 plays performed by children’s and youth’s theatre groups have participated in the festival. The festival performances are traditionally finished with scientific and practical conference where participants discuss the work of every theatre group and actual problems of modern theatre. In 2006 22 theatre groups from 14 Leningrad Oblast Districts took part in the festival.
